Moving Wisdom offers senior citizens age 60 and older the opportunity to build healthier bodies and express their creativity through movement. Created by Sylvia Soumah, founder of West African dance company Coyaba Dance Theater and head of TWB@THEARC's African Dance Program, Moving Wisdom integrates African and other culturally specific dance forms with related music to inspire the mind, body and soul.
Created in 2007, Moving Wisdom was designed to help seniors living near THEARC improve their mobility, flexibility, coordination and range of movement to help them live healthier, more active lifestyles. These goals were based on the results of studies that show seniors who regularly take part in targeted movement programs increase range of motion, enhance leg strength and improve gait. Moving Wisdom also provides secondary benefits that are equally important. Seniors play with movement, craft dances and explore their individual creativity. As they learn dance styles, the instructor highlights historical, religious, cultural and social elements of each. Artistic exploration and cerebral stimulation are just two of the benefits Moving Wisdom provides to an often overlooked and underserved population.
Moving Wisdom classes are held at TWB@THEARC twice a week for six weeks with a capacity of 25 students per class. The program concludes with a public performance in THEARC Theater and a celebratory post-performance luncheon for all participants
