The Washington Ballet is thrilled to announce the 2013.2014 Season: SOARING! And invites you for an enticing season of innovative contemporary and beloved classical performances that will certainly entertain, enrich and inspire you!
Embracing the artistry of movement, the season opens with one of ballet’s most powerful and passionate masterpieces, GISELLE. Demanding technical perfection and outstanding grace, the Company artists bring this story of tragic romance, betrayal and redemption to life.
Spring opens with The Jazz/Blues Project, a riveting “American Experience” program of music and dance. The music of late Jazz saxophonist Charlie “Bird” Parker is a haunting backdrop for Val Caniparoli’s striking Bird’s Nest; Trey McIntyre’s powerful Blue Until June is performed to music popularized by Etta James. Followed by an invasion of plies and jetés the British Invasion: The Beatles & The Rolling Stones is a ballet-inspired battle between two of Britain's legendary bands with performances of Trey McIntyre’s A Day in the Life and Christopher Bruce’s highly acclaimed “rock ballet” Rooster.
Experience an all-NEW gala-style program Tour-de-Force: Balanchine! with one of ballet’s most challenging and gratifying works by choreographer, George Balanchine with Themes and Variations as its climatic center-piece. We end the Five-Series subscription season with a magically timeless trip to Neverland and a New Production of Septime Webre’s Peter Pan, capturing the enchantment of childhood in all of us.
The 2013.2014 season also features a world premiere by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, whose Sueño de Mármol wowed audiences and critics alike; specially designed family programming that includes The Nutcracker and Balanchine's Who Cares? danced to the George Gershwin songbook; and behind-the-scenes looks with inthewings with Septime Webre.
