Community Engagement Associate

Community Engagement, Staff, Washington School of Ballet

Devinne Cook is a dynamic dance professional with over a decade of experience in performance, education, and choreography. Her journey in dance began at the age of three, leading to a successful career that blends artistry and leadership. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA), specializing in contemporary and jazz styles.

During her time at UNCSA, Devinne played a key role in the development of the Artists of Color organization, which began as a safe space for students of color and grew into one of the largest student-led organizations on campus. Under her leadership, the group established a 10-month program that included community outreach, student-led performances, and forums to discuss important issues such as diversity and inclusion. She collaborated with faculty and school leadership to initiate necessary conversations and foster change, giving students a platform to express their creativity and advocate for their needs.

In her current role as the Community Engagement Associate at The Washington Ballet, Devinne looks forward to playing a pivotal role in ensuring that dance is accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds, aligning with The Washington Ballet’s mission of enriching lives through the arts. Her previous community engagement work with TWB includes her time as a teaching artist for Dance DC, where she brought dance education to students across the DC area.

Devinne also serves as Adjunct Faculty at Howard Community College, where she teaches Intermediate Jazz Dance. Her course explores the evolution of jazz dance from its African roots to its presence on Broadway, with a focus on technique, history, and cultural appreciation.

In her free time, Devinne enjoys instructing Pure Barre and travels nationwide as a dance competition adjudicator, offering feedback to young dancers and encouraging their growth. She also holds a Master of Science in Business from Wake Forest University, further demonstrating her blend of artistic and administrative expertise.

Devinne’s passion for community engagement, education, and dance continues to shape her contributions both on and off the stage, as she strives to inspire others through the art of dance.
