Emilia Ferrara

Emilia Newell Ferrara is a born and raised Washingtonian, an author, editor and teacher, and is an alumna of The Washington School of Ballet. Her tutelage began under Mary Day and included the Webre Fellowship for Dance Direction and Management where she shadowed Septime Webre and volunteered at THEARC. After matriculating from Georgetown University, Ferrara earned her masters from Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism. She began her fashion journalism career at T: The New York Times Style Magazine before serving as managing editor of The New York Observer Magazine. She is the founder of Capitally, an online publication covering sustainable fashion, green beauty, and wellness. She is the author of Mag World, a non-fiction book published in 2017 about the beauty, fashion and magazine industries. She has served on the board of The D.C. Sustainable Fashion Collective and has taught Fashion Journalism at Georgetown. Ferrara currently serves as D.C. Commissioner of Fashion Arts & Events and leads a local committee of The Daughters of The American Revolution. In 2019, she helped to plan The Washington School of Ballet’s 75th Anniversary.
